Trained in political anthropology under Georges Balandier, I went on to study the closed worlds of those pushed to the margins, confined behind borders — in France, Africa, and India. Nothing there remains static: neither the mechanisms of domination, nor the ways people reinvent themselves, whether through “practices of subjugation or, more autonomously, through practices of liberation” (Michel Foucault).

Writing, filming, photographing: it is always the subject that dictates the form. Each project is rooted in the field, to grasp local logics of interpretation, the modes of expression and the ways meaning takes shape in practice. A practice grounded in moving the gaze off-center.
